The Elgin Local School District dedicated to work in partnership with students, families, and the community to prepare students to be lifelong learned through the commitment of the staff to grow collaboratively as a professional learning community.
The staff of the Elgin Local School District will foster a safe environment where all students will embrace academic and personal growth, exhibit respect for self and others, collaborate as a team, and learn to be efficient problem solvers. Each of these core beliefs are staples of successful leaders.
Overview
The Elgin School District is located in a rural part of Marion County in Ohio. A large district of nearly 164 square miles, Elgin is comprised mostly of farmland. The Elgin School District serves the villages of Prospect, Green Camp, New Bloomington, and LaRue, and also the western portion of Marion City and surrounding areas. The district serves approximately 1,000 students in grades kindergarten through 12. The district currently has one K-12 building which was opened in September 2013. This is the first and only campus-style school building in Marion County.
The Elgin School District is a leader in educational programming and extracurricular offerings. Signature programs include several honors and college credit courses at the high school; a positive behavior support program at the middle school; and differentiated learning in grades K-5.
The Elgin School District has made several advances in the area of technology in recent years. Currently, Elgin is a 1-to-1 chromebook district in which each student in grades K-12 is assigned his/her own device to use throughout the day. The students in grades 4-12 take the device home. Also each classroom is equipped with an interactive projector and various other technological tools.
There are also a number of other technology opportunities going on in our school. Elgin High School has added online computer classes where students can take a variety of computer classes from Digital Photography to Computer programming and Elgin Middle School has added online language classes as well as digital music classes. In addition, Elgin has added a Technology Specialist for grades 2-8 where the students gain the fundamental skills needed to function in the digital world. In K-1, the students are learning the basics of moving around on the device, as well as typing skills to better function on the device.
The students have access to interactive online textbooks, a wealth of information, and the ability to create ongoing electronic portfolios. Along with that all grades are online for parents/students to check daily, and lunch can be paid for online.
Elgin has a state of the art Digital Media Center (DMC) where students comes to experience new technologies such as an ActiWall, ActiTable, green screen, 3D printer, stationary bikes with iPads, interactive projectors, video recording devices, Dash and Dot, Mac and Window devices to experience all types of innovative technology.
Elgin students have access to the Sandusky Plains Environmental Education Center (SPEEC) — tall grass prairie ecosystem, which consists of 35 acres that includes the laboratory building, 1.5-acre pond, four-acre wetlands, and three miles of trails.
Elgin Local students and staff make valuable contributions to the greater community through participation in numerous civic and social organizations.

Extracurriculars and co-curricular programs
Elgin offers a wide variety of extracurricular and co-curricular activities in both the areas of athletics and fine arts. Athletic programs at the high school include, football, volleyball, girls and boys basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, cross country, bowling, and swimming. Our fine arts programs are noteworthy. Elgin High School has two Concert Choirs, Show Choir, Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band. Both groups enter many competitions throughout the year, consistently earning very high marks. Additionally, students at the high school perform a major musical production in the spring.
Elgin also offers several extracurricular clubs at the high school such as Science Club, Robotics Club, Spanish Club, Future Farmers of America, Yearbook, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The middle school offers choir and band, and students can participate in Marching Band, Jazz Band, and the Pep Band at the high school. Students can also participate in football, volleyball, cross country, girls and boys basketball, and track and field.
The elementary school offers band for 5th grade and African Drums for 4th and 5th graders, ball-handling club K-5, cross country K-5, Leadership Clubs K-5 and PTO. We also offer SOAR Club before and after school through the 21st Century Grant.
From arts groups to service and academic clubs, Elgin students have many opportunities for enrichment.
Partnerships
The district contracts with the North Central Ohio Educational Service Center for student support services in special education, teacher training and curriculum support. Elgin is a member of Tri-Rivers Career Center, which provides high quality vocational education programs for juniors and seniors.
