Food Services

Elgin Local School District provides high quality learning environments helping each student reach his/her level of success. With that in mind, the mission of the Food Services Department is meeting new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.

School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size.

School lunches meet standards requiring:
  • age appropriate calorie limits
  • larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of fruit or vegetable)
  • a wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes.
  • fat free chocolate, 1% white milk
  • 51% of our grains are whole grains
  • and less sodium

We are always working to offer Elgin students healthier and tastier choices. School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families.

Each food service employee attends an annual mandatory meeting on food safety and sanitation, food allergies and first aid training. The District also participates in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP)and School Breakfast Program in all schools. The Food Service Director also participates in Serv Safe class, a nationally recognized program. This certificate is accredited by the American National Standards Institute-Conference for Food Protection and the National Restaurant Association.

Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose a school breakfast and lunch.
