About Mrs. Harbin

This is my 18th year teaching full-time at Elgin Local Schools and my 11th year at Elgin High School (EHS).

This year I am teaching/facilitating a number of on-line computer technology courses through FuelEd and through Marion Technical College (MTC).  I am actively involved in the EHS, EMS, and VLA learning communities and love working with our students in and out of the classroom.

I live in the Bucyrus area and enjoy the commute through the countryside to Elgin.  I got married during the quarantine to my wonderful husband, Tim, who works in the automotive repair industry as a body man, detailer, and general handyman.  We have a tabby cat named Feona, who is a true diva and rules the household.  We also have a chocolate lab named Cocoa Bean (Beaner for short), who enjoys roaming the large yard and napping.  I have two sons, Tim and Matt, who are both graduates of Elgin.  Tim graduated from Marietta College with a bachelor's degree in broadcasting with a minor in theater and is working in the Central Ohio film community ("Finding Love in Valentine,"Mad Town," and "Mad Dog" to name a few recent ones, as well as working for NBC News at the Republican National Convention); at a Cleveland-area haunted house on weekends as a character, stilt walker, and bungee jumper; and web designer and PC support at a downtown Cleveland company.  Tim is a part-time college student working on his masters degree in information technology/programming.  He also taught English to South Korean K-8 students in South Korea, as well as acting and doing lighting/sound for a number of films there, and lived in Auckland, New Zealand, while working for a television/movie studio.  Tim has given me a grand cat, Smokie.  Matt is a robotics engineer at Honda and lives near Marion with Lauren, a cosmetologist and assistant manager of a hair salon in Columbus.  He has an Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Marion Technical College and certificates from many robotics courses.  Matt went through the engineering program at EHS, TRCC, and MTC.  He has given me my granddaughters, Maddie and Ella, who are the most amazing granddaughters, and two grand cats, Howie and Harry.  Tim and Matt are willing to speak with students on their careers in broadcasting, film-making, computer technology, robotics, and engineering. I also have two bonus daughters, Brittany and Tiffany.  Brittany works in the auto dealership and repo industry and has given us several grand dogs and grand cats.  Tiffany is a homemaker and has given us two adorable and ornery grandsons, AJ and Carson.

For the 2020-2021 school year, I am teaching 7th grade social studies in the afternoons, going back to my middle school roots.  Previously, I taught 7th grade English with an emphasis on writing at Elgin Junior High School for six years.  I also taught one session of English 9 summer school.  Before being hired full-time at Elgin, I substitute taught in the Elgin School District, TRCC, and other Marion County schools for over two (2) years while working on the coursework required for my teaching license.

I am also monitoring a number of VLA classes (the online only option for students the first semester 2020-2021) for EHS and EMS.

I am licensed by the State of Ohio to teach middle school (grades 4 - 9) in language arts, reading, and social studies; grades 5-12 integrated vocational business; and reading intervention K-12.  I have a master's degree in education with emphasis in literacy from Ashland University.  I am a past high school building representative and past treasurer, vice-president, and president of the Elgin Education Association (EEA), Phi Alpha Theta (history honor society) member, and the Global Association of Teachers of Economics (GATE) member.  For Elgin Schools, I am a former member of the OIP district and building leadership committees and current member of the District Technology Committee.  I have also tutored EJHS and EHS students in a wide variety of subject areas and monitored EHS Wednesday and Saturday School, EJHS noon detention, and EJHS after school detention for over six years, as well as previously been junior class advisor, student council advisor, and yearbook advisor.

My prior education and experience includes an associate's degree in office administration with emphasis in medical offices, a bachelor's degree in business administration (BSBA), and a master's degree in executive business management (MBA).   Before teaching, I was active in the central Ohio business community, working in account management, fundraising, recruiting, programming, marketing, computer hardware and software conversions, writing, and public relations.

I spend my time outside of school traveling and making memories. I practice yoga and meditation and enjoy reading, walking, swimming, attending auctions/antique shows/yard sales, watching horror movies (especially zombie movies), and spending time with family.
