Elgin Wellness Policy

8510 - Wellness Policy

The Elgin Local Schools Board of Education recognizes that good nutrition and regular physical activity affect the health and wellness of all students. Research suggests that there is a positive correlation between a student's health and well being and his/her ability to learn. Furthermore, we believe that schools can and must play an important part in aiding students to establish their health and nutrition habits by providing nutritious meals and snacks, supporting the positive development of good eating habits, and promoting increased physical activity both in and out of the school setting.

The Elgin Wellness Committee met at the end of the 2017-2018 school year to assess/summarize the year.  These activities included a “Walk-to-School Day”, Every Kid Healthy Week (April) and a Crazy Comet Fun Run.

The district/cafeteria continues to move forward with healthy food offerings for students.  Participation in the breakfast program in K-12 increased during the 2017-2018 school year.  It was explained that federal funding/grants for schools is achieved by following rules/polices of the district.  Fundraising in the district is still a concern for items which are sold.  The committee will continue to discuss solutions for fundraising.

The Elgin Wellness Committee meets periodically during the school year to review initiatives and goals for the healthy education of Elgin students, to review the wellness policy for revisions and to assess the school environment.
