The Elgin Local Schools Board of Education unanimously approved our “Return to School” plan after the plan was presented by our leadership team. The guiding principles for the plan are based on the common agreements between all Marion County schools that were shared with you a couple weeks ago and developed with guidance from the Marion County Health Department. Parents/guardians will have the flexibility to choose one of the following two educational options for their student(s):
- Physically attending school in the building with increased safety precautions in place, understanding that a hybrid plan or remote learning may be possible if greater health precautions must be implemented
- Dedicated online option for at least a full semester at a time in which students will take a full schedule of classes in a digital format through the Virtual Learning Academy (VLA).
Entire Restart School Plan - ALL parents should access the survey on the last page of the plan slides.
Some important aspects to the plan are as follows:
- Since the beginning of this year will be like none we have ever experienced, we, like many other schools have made the decision postpone the student start date in order to allow for more professional development, preparation, and training for our staff. Along with the delayed start date we will also begin the year for students on a staggered beginning. Half of our students will begin on Monday, August 31 st and the other half will begin on Tuesday, September 1 st . This will help students, parents, and staff to experience the split schedule that could be utilized if we are recommended or required to move to a hybrid learning plan.
- As previously planned, kindergarten screening will still take place on Wednesday, August 19th and Thursday, August 20th .
If you do not have access to the internet you may contact your student’s school office beginning next Monday (August 3rd). Parents: Please complete the parent survey one time for each student who will attend school this year by next Wednesday, August 5th.
On behalf of the Board of Education, leadership team and entire staff I want to say thank you to the entire Elgin community for your continued support throughout this time.
