Weighted Grades

Directions on how to figure out weighted grades:

1.  Add up the total number of points possible in each category.  Add up the total number of points the student received in each category.  Take the total points earned in each category and divide by the total number of points available.  This will give you a decimal number (or percent if you move the decimal right 2x’s).

2.  Change weighted percent for each category to a decimal number.  (P.O.A.L. = .6 and Final Assessment = .4)

3.  Multiply each decimal grade by the weighted decimal number.

4.  Add the 2 numbers you got in step 3 together.

5.   Move the decimal 2 places to the right to change that number to a percent, and that equals the student’s final percent grade.

Scenario #1:

Mrs. Held’s science class:

Final Assessments are worth 40% (.4)

 P.O.A.L.’s are worth 60%  (.6)

1.  Suzie has two Final Assessment grades - 14/20 and 25/25  (39 points earned out of 45 points possible = .87 or 87%)

two pretest grades (P.O.A.L) - 16/20 and 85/100    (101 points out of 120 = .84 or 84%)

three lab grades (P.O.A.L) - 3/4, 9/10, 23/28 (35 points out of 42 points = .83 or 83%)

five homework/class work assignments (P.O.A.L) - 10/10, 9/10, 5/5, 5/5  (29 points out of 30 points = .97 or 97%)

            TOTAL P.O.A.L. = 165 points out of 192 possible = .86 or 86%

2.  Final Assessments = .4 of total    and  P.O.A.L.’s = .6 of total.

3.  F.A. = .87 X .4 = 0.348     and      P.O.A.L. = .86 X .6 = 0.516

4.  0.348  +  0.516  =  0.864

5.   .864 =  86.4%  B

Scenario #2:  Tommy has 3 F.A.:  30%, 65%, and 45% = 140/300 = .47 or 47%

            6 P.O.A.L’S: 50%, 100%, 45%, 80%, 76%, and 100% = 451/600 = .75 or 75%

.47 x .4 = .188      and      .75 x .6 = .45     Total points = .638 = 63.8% = D

So…Tommy passed.  But if Tommy wanted to earn a higher grade…he could retake/redo/correct any or all of the P.O.A.L. assignments.

Let’s take a closer look at how this improves his grade….

F.A. = 47%

P.O.A.L. = 100%

.47 X .4 = 0.188    AND    1.0 x .6 = 0.6   Total points = 78.8% which is a C+

So with a little extra effort….Tommy could really improve his grade!!!!
