Brian Agler Hosting Alumni Open Gym and Youth BKB Clinic

Elgin High School Alumni and current coach of the WNBA Dallas Wings will be hosting a youth basketball camp and alumni open gym on Sunday, March 3rd at Elgin.  The alumni open gym is open to both men and women and will be from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM followed by the youth camp from 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM.

On Thursday, 3/7 the Elgin Local School District will be holding a "Volunteers Dinner" to recognize the numerous volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to assisting with our school programs.  Please contact Jason Hix at hix_j@elginschools.org to reserve your place.

4th Annual Elgin Reverse Raffle - Sat. March 30th

Health Clinic Reminders
  1. Each student must provide an excuse from the doctor with any orders that pertain to the school day.
  2. Medications to be given at school must have a doctor's order.
  3. Students must have correct documentation from a doctor to warrant the need/necessity for any apparatus (crutches/walking boots/wheelchairs) to be used at school

Elgin Middle School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 2/28/17. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. It is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education.

Weekly Messenger 10/26/15

Greetings Comet Families! Here are the EMS announcements for the week of 10/26/2015: 

  • Parent Teacher Conferences are November 9, 10 & 12.  Conference forms were sent home last week.  They are also available on our website.  You may either schedule a Team Conference with Core Curriclum teachers, or you may schedule individual teacher conferences.  Forms are due by November 4th. 
  • 7th Graders will take a trip to the Palace Theater on Friday, October 30th. There is no cost for this trip.
  • Our first Middle School dance will take place Friday, October 30th.  Cost of admission is $5 and students must have all of their work completed.  Concessions will be available for $1.
  • Fall pictures have been distributed to students.  If you are not happy with your students' pictures, the retake day will be Friday, October 30th. Forms are available in the office.
  • The end of the 1st Quarter is October 30th.  Please make sure you are checking PowerSchool grades for your student.
  • Just a reminder regarding grades 6-12 attendance policy. Students may only miss up to 5 days per quarter.  Absences beyond 5 days that are not super excused (Dr. Note/Court/Funeral) will result in failure of that quarter.

Elgin vs. NU MS VB - SITE CHANGE

Due to some maintenance work being completed at the Elgin K-12 facility, and the potential for a disruption to our water supply, the Elgin vs. NU middle school volleyball game scheduled for Saturday, 9/13/14 at 10:00 AM has been moved to North Union Middle School.  The Elgin vs. NU middle school volleyball game scheduled for Monday, 10/6/14 will be played at Elgin Middle School at 5:00 PM.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

CAMP INVENTION

Your community is hosting Camp Invention once again.  CAMP INVENTION will be held at the Elgin K - 12 building June 25 - 29, 2018, for Marion County students grades K - 8.

FREE Pancakes! - EMS "Books-N-Breakfast"
Middle School "Books N' Breakfast"
 

A FREE pancake breakfast will take place Saturday, May 17th from 8am-10am in the Cafetorium. The book fair will be open during the breakfast. 
 

The dates the book fair will be open are May19th-23rd from 7:30am-2:30pm in the Media Center.
 

We will have a basket raffle.  Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Tickets can be purchased at the breakfast or during the book fair.  Basket drawing will be during lunch on the 23rd.  Need not be present to win. 

Elgin Volleyball Youth Camp

The Elgin High School Volleyball team will be holding a youth camp June 5th, 6th and 9th from 9:00-11:00 A.M. in the main gym.  Registration forms have been sent home with all of our students entering grades 3-5 in the fall.  If you have any questions, you may contact Elgin VB coach Sherril Appelfeller at sherrilappelfeller@gmail.com or 740-383-3949.

 

Athletic Schedule Changes 4/14/14

The Middle School track meet at Fairbanks scheduled for Monday, 4/14/14 has been CANCELLED due to the weather at Fairbanks.  There will be NO middle school track practice today.  The varsity boys baseball game against Shekinah Christian will begin at 4:30 PM instead of 5:00 PM due to the weather forecast.

 

Blizzard Bag #3

Blizzard bag #3 will be due on April 17th. This is required by the state of Ohio as a contingency day under the new calamity day policy.

PARCC Field Test

All students in Grade 6 & 8, as well as Algebra II and Geometry students at the HS, will participate in the PARCC Field Test.  Click here for more information.

Elgin FFA Ranked as a Top 10 Chapter in the State

There are over 300 FFA chapters in Ohio and the Elgin FFA has been slated as an overall Top 10 chapter!

Elgin FCA 5K April 12th

Elgin Fellowship of Christian Athletes are hosting a 5K run "Leave the Devil in the Dust" on Saturday April 12th. The Registration time is 8am and start time is 9am at Marion Catholic High School parking lot.

Middle School Track Practices Start 3/10/14

The Elgin Middle School track team will start practices on Monday, 3/10/14.  All track team candidates are asked to meet after school in the cafetorium.  Track team members need to have a current physical on file in the athletic office before starting practice.

Grade Card Distribution Postponed

Due to cancellations and delays of school, grade cards for the 2nd nine weeks will be distributed to Elgin Middle School students on February 7.

MS Basketball vs. RV Postponed

The Elgin Middle School Boys and Girls basketball games scheduled for Monday, 1/27/14 have been postponed until Thursday, 1/30/14.  The non-league games scheduled against Grant Black on Thursday, 1/30/14 have been cancelled and will not be made up.  

The boys will travel to RV this Thursday, and the girls will host RV.

 

Youth Basketball CANCELLED

The youth basketball games scheduled for Saturday, 1/25/14 at Elgin have been cancelled.  Please contact your coaches for make-up information.

MS Boys Basketball vs. Pleasant - CANCELLED

The Middle School boys basketball game scheduled for Saturday, 1/25/14 against Pleasant has been cancelled.

 

EHS & EMS Christmas Concert Cancelled

Due to the cancellation of school the Elgin High School and Middle School Christmas Concert will be cancelled.  It will not be rescheduled.

Practices Canceled

Due to the flood waters that are having very serious effects on many residents of our district, and the inability of many of our students to travel safely to school, high school boys and girls basketball practices and middle school cheerleading practices scheduled for Monday, 12/23/13 have been canceled.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all of our Elgin families who have been effected by the flood.

Elgin Schools host Veteran’s Day Concert
Elgin Schools will be performing a Veteran’s Day Concert.
 
The elementary, middle school, and high school choirs will be performing a combined concert in honor of our veterans on Wednesday, Nov. 13 in the Cafetorium. Choir students in grades 5-8 will perform at 6:30 p.m., followed by a brief intermission, and concluding with the high school choirs performing at 7:30 p.m. 
 
These concerts will be a tribute to all those currently serving and those who have served. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

If you have a child riding the bus, please make sure to check out the bus route information. The route includes pick-up and drop-off times, name of the bus driver, and the bus number. 

MS/HS CC Practice Information


Cross country practice for all middle school and high school students interested in running cross country this year will begin on Monday, 8/5/13 from 6:00-7:30 P.M. at Elgin High School.  All students interested in running need to have a current physical.  If you have any questions, you may contact Coach Stanley at 740-396-4613

Middle School VB Practice Information


Mandatory practice for all middle school girls (7th & 8th) interested in playing volleyball this year begins on Thursday, 8/1/13 from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. in the old high school gymnasium. Elgin Middle School is the FIRST and ONLY Middle School in Marion County to earn the Ohio Department of Education's Momentum Award for All A's in student growth.

Percentage Of Middle, High School Students Bullied Drops To Lowest Level Recorded.

According to the Washington Post (5/15, Layton), about 20 percent of US middle schools and high schools reported that they had been bullied in 2013, the “lowest rate since the federal government began collecting data on bullying in 2005.”

High School Football Parent Meeting - 5/21

There is a mandatory meeting Thursday, 5/21/15 at 7:00 pm regarding high school football for next year.  Interested current grade 8 - 11 students and a parent are expected to attend. 

EMS After School Tutoring

Elgin Middle School will offer after school tutoring to any student in grade 6, 7, or 8. 

Activity Fees Lowered for 2014-15 School Year!

The Elgin Local Schools Board of Education voted to substantially reduce extracurricular acitivity fees at their regular meeting on June 24th.  For the 2014-15 school year, activity fees for the Elgin Local School District will be as follows:

Elgin High School Students - $50.00 per activity ($100.00 individual cap)($200.00 Family cap)

Elgin Middle School Students - $25.00 per activity ($50.00 individual cap)($200.00 Family cap)

For only Activity Fees, this reduced rate applies to all students, including those on free and reduced lunches.

Activity fees must be paid prior to the first contest or performance of each season.  Please make checks payable to "Elgin Local Schools", and submit to Elgin Activities Director Jason Hix.

Flip Flop Around The World

Elgin High School along with many of Elgin Local's student leadership groups are collecting new or used flip flops. All of the collected flip flops will be donated to children of all ages all around the world that are without shoes.

Elgin Baseball Youth Camp
The Elgin Baseball Youth Camp will be held June 3-June 5 and is now accepting registrations. Our camp goal is to provide each player with instruction that will help strengthen fundamentals and success for his future experiences. We look forward to many exciting and successful seasons for the Comet Baseball program and hope to have many of our campers become part of the Comet Baseball Family.

Immunizations - Next Year's 7th Graders

Attention parents of all current 6th grade students:

Ohio law dictates that all 2014-15 incoming 7th graders must receive a Tdap vaccination before entering school in the fall.

Please make an appointment with your health care provider soon as these slots generally fill very quickly in the late summer.

Your child will be excluded from attending school if he/she does not have this mandatory immunization.
