Leadership in the Lunchroom
Elgin FFA members attended a Lunchroom conference at the OSUM Campus. The conference was given to encourage schools to partner with farms to purchase local items for school lunches. There also was a tour of the Marion OSU campus and the Marion Technical College campus for all of the members that participated. This conference displayed the diversity emerging in agriculture marketing through locally grown food and the potential for economic impact for local communities and the agriculture industry. FFA students in attendance discovered new opportunities for SAE’s, (Supervised Agriculture Experiences that FFA students are required to have) entrepreneurship, ag business, and other ag related careers.
There were many guests in attendance to explain the diversity of careers in the agriculture industry. The guests included Ohio FFA President, Sydney Snider, Ohio Farm to School Program Director, Carol Smathers, OSU Extension Specialist that works with greenhouses, Dr. Beth Scheckelhoff, and Ag Credit Loan Officers, Andrea Bayles and Libby Bender. Also in attendance at the conference was a food panel that consisted of several people in the surrounding counties who gave information about the kind of agriculture business they are involved in and how they impact their community. The FFA members were able to ask the Food Panel any questions they wanted after all of the businesses presented. This conference gave FFA members a look at a few of the many different careers in the agriculture industry and also hoped to spark an interest to FFA members in certain career fields.
