Soil Judging CDE

FFA Members Excel at Soil Judging Career Development Event

On September 22, over 30 Elgin FFA members competed at the Hardin Northern Soil judging invitational. There are two different types of soil judging. Rural and Urban soil judging, both require FFA members to look at the landform of the surrounding area and to identify the different textures of soil in the pit. The Rural soil participants have to determine what a farmer can do to improve soil quality to best suit the soil for farming. In Urban soil judging, the contestants must determine what needs to be done so that a house or building can be properly built on that soil. One Rural and one Urban team moved on from the soils invitational to the district contest that was held on September 27 in Union county. The Urban team consisted of Cade Field, Amy Hafer, Autumn Landon, Seldon Dyer, Riley McElroy, and Kirsten Stuerer. The Rural team consisted of Bekah Muselin, Heather Swartz, Chloe Kagel, John Isler, Kiley Griem, and Kayedon Martin. The Rural team placed sixth in our district just 2 points from qualifying for the state contest. The Urban team placed second overall and qualified for the state contest held in Fairfield county.
